Retsol History

The Retsol name is steeped in a proud history...

Established in 1930 as a semi-autonomous body, the Disabled Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment League was concerned with the employment of those former members of the armed forces with physical disabilities. District Branch committees were established to assist disabled ex-soldiers with finding employment, providing vocational training and providing payments to supplement their pensions or earnings. Factories and shops were established in the four main centres.

In 1939 the constitution was altered to provide assistance to all disabled ex-members of the armed forces. The name also changed to Disabled Servicemen's Re-establishment League (Inc).

In 1941 the League was appointed an agent of the Rehabilitation Board; this entailed acting on the Board's behalf in assessing the needs of individual cases. The government undertook to provide suitable premises for the organisation.

In 1969 the League was appointed by Government to administer its policy concerning the rehabilitation of all people with disabilities.

In 1974 the organisation name was changed again to Rehabilitation League NZ (Inc).

In 1990 the organisation was restructured and the name changed to Workbridge. The above organisation established the crayon making plant with other units (sheet metal, engineering, cabinet making, etc) to assist with the rehabilitation and work training of Returned Soldiers.

Their products were branded RETSOL from RETurned SOLdiers.

Later as the numbers of soldiers thinned out others were included in the mix to take advantage of the infrastructure, long time unemployed being in the mix.

Finally, in 1990 the Rehabilitation League was restructured into Workbridge and the individual manufacturing units were sold off to private individuals.

Crayon Fun

Image
Crayons can be a pretty versatile art and create an educational activity. More than just a medium for colouring on paper, there are a lot of crayon fun projects you can do at home. Here are some samples of crayon fun you can have with kids of different age groups. Supervising children during these exercises is advised.

Wax Crayon Etching

One of the more magical ways for young artists to experiment with wax crayons is to create their own etching canvas. This crayon project is popular for all age groups.

Children can be as creative as they want to be by filling the first layer of colour with different patterns and etching the black layer with different images.

Crying Crayons

This is one of the most popular ways to have fun with crayons that we’ve seen online.

The crying effect is made by melting the crayons with a hairdryer.

Most of the activity will be in deciding what colours to use for melting.

Crayon Candles

Did you know? In an emergency, you can light up wax crayons and can provide you with a bit of light for about 30 minutes?

Yes, crayons are made of wax and can be turned into candles! Here’s a great way to make it even more artistic and good enough to display at home.

This fun crayon project is more suitable for older kids or adults who can operate a microwave oven and work with hot wax.

Crayon Sun Catchers

Want to hang some colourful shapes near the window?

This is another fun crayon project you can work on requiring just a few materials that you might already have in your home.

These sun catchers look like slightly translucent stained glass.

Stress Bottle with Crayon Shavings

Stress bottles is a great crayon project for helping kids relax.

This is also a great way to build up their observation skills.

Plus, you’re teaching recycling ideas by using old plastic bottles.

Tracing your child’s handprint is always a fun activity. But did you know you can do more with the trace than just colouring it in?

You can actually make fun animal shapes with it! Turkeys, elephants or peacocks are just some examples of this.

This is a project that can be completed over several hours or days. There’s no need to finish it right away.

Using different point sizes is also a good idea to give your artwork some depth — you can do this by alternating between the pointed and the blunt side of the crayon.

Please make sure to remove the paper covering the crayon before melting it with the candle as this may burn.
